Sub-theme1
This painting was acquired by the National Museum of Korea in 2024. Once believed to be the work of Shubun, a Zen monk-painter of Japan’s Muromachi period, it is now regarded as a 16th-century Korean painting based on stylistic analysis. In both panels, mountains and hills are offset to the right and left, creating visual balance when displayed together. The hills and peaks are built up in elongated, oval-shaped layers to emphasize mass, a hallmark of the “cloud-head stroke” (雲頭皴) associated with the Li-Guo school of the Northern Song dynasty. The asymmetrical composition, use of mist and water to suggest depth, and the sharp depiction of tree branches reflect the influence of the An Gyeon School.
Exhibition period July 22, 2025. – August 31, 2025.
