Sub-theme1
These paintings depict scenes of spring, summer, and autumn. Although originally part of a set representing the four seasons, the winter painting is believed to have been lost. The asymmetrical compositions, spacious settings, and twin pine trees atop hills reflect stylistic features of the An Gyeon school. At the same time, the billowing cloud forms and strong contrasts of light and shadow suggest influences from Mi-style landscapes and the Zhe school tradition. The genre scenes set against towering mountains, the vibrant use of color, and the precise rendering of architectural details point to the hand of a court painter. The stylobates feature random work masonry, a Joseon-era technique of piling irregularly shaped stones. This work is worthy of being considered a new benchmark in early Joseon dynasty.
