This painting depicts the Nine Bends of the Wuyi Mountains in Fujian Province, China, where Zhu Xi (1130–1200), the great synthesizer of Neo-Confucianism during the Song dynasty, once resided. The composition follows a journey upriver from right to left, progressing through all nine bends by boat. Each bend features a distinct scenic landmark, arranged at regular intervals across the scroll. This painting reflects the ideals and inner aspirations of Joseon literati, who admired Zhu Xi’s way of seeking enlightenment in nature.
