Sub-theme1
This painting depicts eight scenic views across the four seasons—lush spring, stormy summer, bountiful autumn, and frigid winter. The summer scene is expressed with wet and fluid brushstrokes, while the winter scene is depicted with rough and dry lines to convey the feeling of each season. Yet it is more than a portrayal of seasonal landscapes. The work reflects agricultural themes rooted in the agrarian foundation of society. Sowing and harvesting in accordance with the seasonal calendar were essential virtues that rulers, including the king, were expected to uphold. As such, this painting serves as a visual expression of ideal governance.
