This painting depicts Autumn Moon over Lake Dongting, one of the Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers. The composition is asymmetrical, with the focal point shifted to the right. The moon appears in the sky and it is left unpainted and defining it through the surrounding clouds. Red-tinted foliage throughout the scene suggests an autumnal setting, with light red washes applied to parts of the ground. In the middle ground, a cluster of pavilions and thatched cottages appears; fluttering flags between the cottages hint at the presence of a market. Another painting with a similar composition titled Autumn Moon over Lake Dongting is also known, indicating that this theme followed a standardized format.
