Sub-theme1
Beneath a towering, seemingly toppling cliff, a solitary man gazes at the water in quiet contemplation. The massive cliff is rendered with a brush boldly swept down in a single brushstroke, while the vines trailing down the cliff are drawn with rapid, expressive lines—resulting in a composition marked by striking and vigorous brushwork. Contemporary accounts describe Kang Huian’s painting style as loose and coarse, and this work aligns with that characterization. A seal reading “Injae” (仁齋, Kang Huian’s penname) appears in the middle left of the composition, attributing the painting to him. However, there are also views that do not regard this work as his.
