Even as Buddhism was increasingly marginalized by official policy in the sixteenth century, regional temples grew as active centers of faith. People of every social class participated in creating Buddhist art and performing rituals at temples. With more Buddhist artworks being commissioned or produced by commoners, accessible materials like wood and clay took precedence over expensive materials. In addition, many Buddhist paintings were made for use in the rituals that were regularly conducted at temples.
