This brightly polychromatic painting shows Kshitigarbha and the Ten Kings. The size of each figure is scaled in proportion to its relative significance, and the space between them is filled with billowing clouds. This painting was used for Buddhist rituals intended to ease the pains of hungry ghosts (the Water and Land Ceremony) or to cancel out negative karma preemptively ahead of death (the Preparatory Correction Ceremony), suggesting that a diversity of ritual occasions employed Kshitigarbha images. Attached to the painting was a detailed list of patrons and their respective gifts, a feature of Buddhist paintings sponsored by commoners in the sixteenth century.
