Sub-theme1
This statue depicts Kshitigarbha as a bandana-hooded figure holding a jeweled orb, carved entirely from a single stone block and inscribed on the back of the pedestal. It was originally paired with an image of Avalokiteshvara that is no longer extant. Devotion to Avalokiteshvara and Kshitigarbha was flourishing from late Goryeo to early Joseon, as the Buddhist religion propagated the notion of the Land of Bliss as an afterlife destination in which devotees would be able to be reborn by accumulating karmic rewards, which would also bring this-worldly benefits. This bodhisattva statue represents the imagination of Kshitigarbha as a hooded figure in the sixteenth-century Joseon.
