Humanity Recorded Through Art and Writing

The Joseon Dynasty saw the flourishing of both calligraphy and painting, which were used in increasingly diverse ways. Calligraphy and painting represented the human desire to record, to remember, and to express one’s inner spirit. Joseon people also turned to writing and painting to promote Confucian virtues like loyalty and filial piety, to share their ideals with one another, and to steady their own hearts. These works of calligraphy and art resonate with the very lives of the people of early Joseon, manifesting their humanist spirit.
