This painting depicts a gathering of officials who had studied together at Dokseodang (Reading Research Institute) around 1570. The institution originated from the early Joseon-era sabbatical system, which granted talented young civil officials leave from their duties to devote themselves to reading and study. The work portrays the actual landscape surrounding Dokseodang, located at Dumopo Inlet in Dongho, an area along the Hangang River. The composition places visual emphasis on the mountain to the left, partially covered with a pine forest, within which the Dokseodang building is situated. Because Dokseodang was an institution dedicated specifically to scholarly reading, the painting adopts a unique composition akin to a byeolseodo (a painting of a literati’s retreat), reinterpreting the natural landscape through the lens of geomantic principles.
