This album is a compilation of calligraphy by successive kings of the Joseon dynasty. Yeolseong eopil contains rare examples of royal calligraphy from the early Joseon period, including works by King Munjong (r. 1450–1452) and King Seongjong (r. 1469–1494). Their calligraphy reflects the influence of Zhao Mengfu’s style, which was widely admired during their reigns. Munjong is known to have favored Zhao Mengfu’s calligraphy, blending it with the style of Wang Xizhi; his writing was considered exceptionally precise and exquisite, and was highly prized by his contemporaries. Seongjong also displayed remarkable skill in Zhao Mengfu’s Songxue script, to such an extent that contemporary records note his calligraphy was comparable to that of Prince Anpyeong, whose own style was deeply rooted in Zhao Mengfu’s tradition.
