This work is attributed to Zhao Mengfu, the eminent Yuan-dynasty calligrapher whose style was deeply admired by Prince Anpyeong. It was modeled and engraved as early as the reign of King Sejong and is believed to be the Calligraphy Model Edition of the Thousand Character Classic in Standard and Cursive Scripts—a woodblock-printed edition of Zhao Mengfu’s calligraphy that Prince Anpyeong is recorded to have presented to the court in 1450, the year King Munjong ascended the throne. Several editions of the Thousand Character Classic in Standard and Cursive Scripts, believed to have been printed from these early blocks, survive today. All are finely carved and faithfully preserve the original style.
