This is calligraphy by Hwang Giro (1525–after 1575), one of the foremost masters of cursive script in sixteenth-century Joseon. Hwang’s style was rooted in the classical cursive traditions of Tang-dynasty calligraphers Zhang Xu and Huaisu, while also incorporating the dynamic style of Zhang Bi (1425–1487) of Ming China, resulting in his own distinctive approach to cursive script. This work exemplifies his characteristic brushwork, with slender, thread-like strokes flowing gracefully and effortlessly.
