Sub-theme1
When Yi Monghak initiated a rebellion in 1596 during the Japanese invasions of Joseon, Hong Gasin (1541-1615) gathered a militia and suppressed it. In recognition of this deed, he was appointed as a first-grade Cheongnan (suppressing rebellion) Meritorious Subject in 1604. This portrait is a classic example of seventeenth-century portraits of meritorious subjects. The chest insignia embroidered with a pair of wild geese and the belt decorated in gold reflect his senior-second rank.
