In both late Goryeo and early Joseon, ceramics were important tax goods produced across the country for state use. The Joseon government conducted exhaustive surveys and published detailed geographical records of the entire territory, while also improving rivers and coastal waterways to connect the nation. Along these routes, buncheong ware produced throughout the country was transported to the capital of Hanyang. The combination of strong national institutions and the craftsmanship of local artisans allowed buncheong ware to flourish. Later, ceramic artisans from across the nation were gathered at the official kilns in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do Province, where superb white porcelain began to be produced in earnest.
