Embodying the Spirit of a New Era

To realize its vision of an ideal society, Joseon gradually restructured state rituals and customs according to Confucian propriety, and many of these new rituals featured buncheong ware and white porcelain. Ceramic and metal vessels were produced in standardized forms for use in the “five state rites”: royal ancestral rites, military ceremonies, royal weddings, ceremonies to welcome foreign envoys, and royal funerary rites. Ceramic vessels symbolizing the authority of the new dynasty were also created. The placentas of royal infants were sealed in special ceramic jars to wish for the longevity of the dynasty, and revered scholars were memorialized with ceramic epitaph tablets after their death.
