These buncheong vessels consist of a chakjun (著尊) jar and a jar-shaped ritual vessel featuring golden “eyes.” The chakjun is a symbolic representation of yang energy descending and becoming grounded in the earth, and it was reportedly used in autumn and winter ancestral rites. The jar-shaped vessel with golden eyes does not correspond to any known forms in Joseon ritual vessel illustrations. However, a bowl bearing similar golden-eye motifs appears in the illustration of ritual vessels within the “Gillye” (Auspicious Rites) section of the Five Rites appended to the Annals of King Sejong. This reflects how various Chinese ritual texts were adopted and reinterpreted to fit the structure of Joseon’s Confucian ceremonial system.
