Ewer Used in Royal Banquets
Ewer, White porcelain

This ewer appears to have been a valuable ritual vessel used by the royal court. Its form closely resembles that of the Gold Phoenix Bottle described in the “Garye” (Capping and Wedding Rites) section of the Five Rites in the Annals of King Sejong, as well as the Gold Large Bottle illustrated in the Gukjo oryeui seorye, the revised and expanded edition of the Five Rites. Despite being referred to as a “bottle,” the large bottle is actually a ewer with a spout and handle. The refined yet dignified form of this white porcelain ewer suggests that it may have served as a substitute for either the Gold Phoenix Bottle or the Gold Large Bottle. It was likely used as a vessel for wine or tea in ceremonies such as royal weddings and diplomatic receptions.
