Salloe Ritual Vessel Used in Ancestral Rite
Ritual Vessel Salloe (山罍), White porcelain with fret and mountain design in underglaze cobalt–blue and iron-brown
  • Joseon Dynasty, 15th century
  • Private Collection
  • Treasure

This salloe features a dignified form and is decorated in underglaze with cobalt-blue and iron-brown pigments. The salloe is a ritual vessel documented in the Gillye (Auspicious Rites) section of the Five Rites appended to the Annals of King Sejong and in the Gukjo oryeui seorye, the revised and expanded edition of the Five Rites. Faithfully reflecting the form of its metal counterparts, this white porcelain salloe exemplifies the grandeur and refinement of state ritual vessels used in major court ceremonies.
