Kshitigarbha and the Ten Kings
Kshitigarbha Bodhisattva and Ten Underworld Kings
  • Joseon Dynasty, 1580
  • Color on hemp
  • Horim Museum
  • Treasure

The painting depicts Kshitigarbha, the Ten Kings of the Buddhist netherworld, Six Bodhisattvas, and a congregation. Kshitigarbha, a central figure, appears as a tonsured monk, seated on the elevated platform, with one leg pendant. In the sixteenth century, this type of Kshitigarbha was widely adopted by both painting and sculpture. Rendered on hemp without gold ink, this painting exhibits human figures delicately expressed by competent brushwork, likely to have been executed by a professional academic painter.
