The painting shows Shakyamuni Buddha preaching the Lotus Sutra at Vulture Peak. It was commissioned by a court lady, neé Kang. The full-frontal Buddha takes on the earth-touching gesture symbolizing the moment of Shakyamuni Buddha’s attainment, dressed in a robe revealing his right shoulder. These iconographical features of the preaching Buddha began to appear in the fifteenth century, reflecting the printed illustrations of Buddhist scriptures imported from Ming China.
