The inscription “煙寺暮鍾” (Evening Bell from a Mist-Shrouded Temple) appears at the top of the painting, suggesting its theme, alongside a poem by the Song-era literati Mi Fu(米芾). The motif of Evening Bell from a Mist-Shrouded Temple typically includes a mountain temple and a figure listening to the sound of a bell. Mi Fu’s accompanying poem also references a temple, a monk, and the moon. However, in this painting, only the temple is depicted—neither the monk nor the moon is shown. This suggests that the inscription “煙寺暮鍾” was likely added later by someone who interpreted the painting as representing that theme. The brushwork closely resembles that of Mountain Village in Clearing Mist, in the collection of the LA County Museum of Art and displayed to the left, suggesting that the two were originally part of the same set.
