The Water and Land Ceremony is a Buddhist ritual intended to deliver suffering souls in the netherworld. This book instructs on the liturgical procedures for the Water and Land Ceremony. The compilation of this book was commissioned at Gyeonseongsa Temple by Lady Sin, the wife of Prince Gwangpyeong, the fifth son of King Sejong. She joined the monastic community as an ordained nun after her husband died in 1444, and founded Gyeonseongsa Temple in his memory. This copy seems to have been in her personal belongings, since the book has her Buddhist name “Hyewon” stamped on it.

Exhibition period August 5. - August 31.
