This edition of the Tripitaka Koreana was printed in 1381 from its original Haeinsa woodblocks upon the commission of Yeom Heung-bang wishing for the peaceful rest of his deceased brother-in-law, the thirty-first King Gongmin of Goryeo. In early Joseon, Japanese envoys from the Muromachi shogunate often asked for printed editions or woodblocks of the Tripitaka Koreana. The Joseon court granted such requests multiple times as a diplomatic means to deal with the problem of Japanese pirates. This edition was sent to Japan in the fifteenth century, surviving as the oldest extant set as a whole.
