The Lotus Sutra is known for its effective use of metaphors to deliver Buddhist teachings. This transcribed copy is comprised of seven volumes. For each volume, an illustration drawn in gold ink appears as a frontispiece, followed by texts written in silver ink. This project was initiated by a monk, Deokmyeong, together with 40 lay patrons to accumulate “merit” (gongdeok). The pictorial composition of the frontispiece reflect the convention established in fourteenth-century Goryeo.
