The Portable Shrine and Images of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas from the Pagoda of Simgoksa Temple
Gilt-bronze Portable Shrine and Seven Gilt-bronze Seated Amitabha Buddhas from the Seven-story Stone Pagoda of Simgoksa Temple
  • Early Joseon Dynasty
  • Gilt bronze
  • Simgoksa Temple, Iksan
  • Treasure

This shrine and its statuettes were found at the base of the seven-story stone pagoda of Simgoksa Temple, Iksan. The shrine, modeled on the box form, contained a triad of Amitabha Buddha, Avalokiteshvara, and Kshitigarbha, and four statuettes of Buddha images. Larger than statuettes, the triad exhibits the influences from Tibetan Buddhist art introduced to Korea from Yuan and Ming China, sporting lavish ornaments worn on slender bodies. The insertion of a miniature shrine and small Buddha images inside a pagoda continued in early Joseon.
