Queen Munjeong, the second queen consort of King Jungjong, was a devout Buddhist and lifelong patron of multiple monasteries and temples. This particular painting is one of the four hundred paintings of Buddhas that she commissioned to celebrate the completion of the renovation of Hoeamsa Temple in Yangju. The four hundred paintings constitute four sets, each comprising a hundred paintings of each of the four cardinal Buddhas—Shakyamuni, Bhaisajyaguru, Amitabha, and Maitreya—and their realms. Fifty of each set are drawn in gold ink only, and the rest in polychrome. In the sixteenth-century Joseon, lavish drawings in gold ink on a dark background gained much traction.

Exhibition period June 10. - July 20.
