Bronze Incense Burner with Silver Inlay of Cheonggoksa Temple
  • Joseon Dynasty, 1397
  • Bronze inlaid with silver
  • duk 3103

This stemmed bronze incense burner was crafted in the year following the death of Queen Consort Sindeok of King Taejo, the founder of the Joseon dynasty, and dedicated to Cheonggoksa Temple, Jinju, the queen’s hometown. It was cast after the renovation of the temple led by a monk, Sangchong, under the patronage of Gim Sa-haeng, Gim Jin, and others, who were occupying government positions at the time. The shape of the incense burner closely follows the form of the incense burners produced in Gpryeo in the fourteenth century, comprised of a rounded, wide support, a cylindrical body, and an outwardly extended rim. Decorative patterns thinly inlaid with silver threads over the entire surface add artistic elegance to the burner.
