Birth of Shakyamuni Buddha
Birth of Shakyamuni Buddha
  • Joseon Dynasty, 15th century
  • Color and gold on silk
  • Hongaku-ji Temple

Constituting the first piece of a set of paintings that depict the life story of Shakyamuni Buddha, this painting captures in a single pictorial plane several scenes of the episode of his birth as Prince Siddhartha of Kapilavastu. The center of the painting shows the moment of his birth in Lumbini, and the scenes before and after the birth are also arranged in chronological order. The painting is likely to have been sponsored by the royal family, since its narrative scenes correspond very closely to the illustrations of the Seokbosangjeol, a Korean variation of the life story of Shakyamuni, whose process of compilation, composition, and publication was supervised by the royal house in early Joseon.
