This statue shows Avalokiteshvara seated on a lotus pedestal. The crown decorated with a small Buddha image, the flamboyant earrings and chokers, and the jeweled chains laid over the knees are salient features of the statue. Such lavish ornamentation, with the slender waist and the upright posture, attests to the continuing artistic influences from Tibetan Buddhism that were spread in late Goryeo. This statue was allegedly retrieved from Mount Geumgang, which had long been believed to be a sacred site of Buddhism since the Goryeo period. The devotional practice of having Buddha images carved on the mountain cliffs continued.
