Sub-theme1
This painting depicts the preachings of Amitabha, Bhaisajyaguru, Maitreya, and Shakyamuni in a clockwise direction from top left. Yi Jong-lin, a grandson of the eleventh King Jungjong, commissioned this painting in memory of his maternal grandfather, whose funeral he also served to officiate. It is Confucian practice that the oldest son of a deceased person presides over the funeral, and such Confucian funerary custom gradually became a standard in early Joseon. And yet, the case of Yi Jong-lin indicates that a Buddhist funeral led by the son of a daughter continued to be performed.
