Sub-theme1
This painting depicts Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara seated comfortably on an outcrop rising above undulating sea waves. Avalokiteshvara, accompanied by Boy Pilgrim Sudhana, continued to be a preferred pictorial subject in early Joseon from Goryeo. This painting was commissioned in 1427 by two women whose names were recorded as “née Gang of Jinyang” and “née Hong of Namyang.” A female devotee with her maids appear on the bottom left of the painting. Her coiffed hairstyle and elaborate garment hint at her prestigious social standing, indicative of female royal patronage for the painting.
Exhibition period June 10. - July 20.
