These were part of a reliquary set discovered inside the first level of the five-story stone pagoda erected at Muryangsa Temple in Buyeo. Its second and fifth levels also contained sets of reliquaries. In early Joseon, small statuettes of Buddhas and bodhisattvas were commonly deposited inside pagodas. This particular set constitutes a triad of Amitabha, Kshitigarbha, and Avalokiteshvara. This combination proved particularly favored in the fifteenth century. The pointy ushnisha of Amitabha Buddha, the depiction of Kshitigarbha as a figure hooded with a bandana, and the bodhisattva’s three-strand necklace suspended at the chest level began to appear from the period of early Joseon.
