Sub-theme1
Queen Dowager Insu, the mother of King Seongjong, had this bell crafted and enshrined at Sujongsa Temple. Formerly invested as Lady Subin of Han, she was the widow of Crown Prince Uigyeong and lived in a private residence outside the palace until her son was crowned. She commissioned this bell during her time outside the court, together with the abbot of Jeongeopwon Nunnery, where royal women withdrew themselves from the courtly life. The shoulder of the bell is bordered by a raised circular band, and the striking zone is marked by a lotus flower pattern. These decorative themes reflect the style of Buddhist bells produced during the Goryeo period.
