This statue of Amitabha Buddha was commissioned in 1458 by Prince Hyoryeong, an older brother of King Sejong, together with Lady Uibin of Gwon and Lady Myeongbin of Gim, royal concubines of King Taejong. The project was executed by Yi Jung-seon, a court painter, and eight other court artisans. Prince Hyoryeong, known for his devotion to Buddhism, and other royal patrons expressed their best wishes for the health and longevity of the king and his queen consort, the final termination of armed conflicts, and the peace and prosperity of the country. This statue was fashioned as a central figure of the triad in which Amitabha Buddha is accompanied by the two flanking bodhisattvas, Avalokiteshvara and Kshitigarbha.
