Lacquered Ogival Tray with Mother-of-pearl Inlay of Peony Scroll Design
  • Joseon Dynasty, 15th–16th centuries
  • Tokyo National Museum

This work exhibits some key features of Goryeo-period lacquerware inlaid with mother-of-pearl, such as the use of jureumjil technique (cut-out) to form small floral and scroll motifs, with the stems rendered in metal. However, the peony scroll is expressed in a more naturalistic manner, appearing to flutter in the wind rather than following the schematized designs typical of the Goryeo period. The generous spacing between the peony scrolls enhances such visual impact. As a transitional piece linking the Goryeo and Joseon periods, it clearly reflects the emerging stylistic trends of early Joseon lacquerware.
