This painting, executed on two connected panels of ramie, depicts cranes, a turtle, bamboo, mountains, waterfalls, and white clouds. The red-crowned crane is rendered with remarkable detail, including the distinctive black band-like feathers running from beside the eye down to the neck, the semi-circular white body feathers, the black tail feathers, and the legs with visible joints. The turtle, emerging from the water, raises its head as it exhales auspicious vapors, its shell patterns prominently highlighted. The foreground rocks and distant mountains are outlined with sinuous ink lines and lightly colored in blue and green. With gold pigment accentuating the outlines and inner details, they evoke the mystical quality of traditional blue-and-green landscape paintings.
