Sub-theme1
This handscroll contains sketches by Kanō Tan’yū, the founding master of the Kanō School during the Edo period, who served as a court painter and esteemed connoisseur. Included among these are three falcon paintings by the Joseon artist Yi Am (1507–1566). In the first painting, three falcons are perched in a row, each grooming its feathers or talons. The second painting shows a falcon perched on a post-shaped stand, its back turned as it glances over its shoulder into the distance—a composition closely resembling Falcon Perched on a Branch in the collection of the Japan Folk Crafts Museum. The third painting depicts a falcon preening its feathers atop a horizontal perch, accompanied by a poetic inscription by Jeong Saryong (1491–1570); the seals of both Jeong and Yi appear on the left side.
