This animal painting captures a peaceful moment of a mother dog caring for her three puppies in the shade of a tree. The trunk is depicted with simple brushstrokes, while the leaves are rendered with broad, pressed brushwork. The upper portion of the tree is intentionally omitted. The mother dog and her puppies are rendered in ink washes with tonal variations that create form and depth. The mother dog, in particular, is painted in rich, dark ink, giving her fur a glossy appearance. It is thought to depict a dog raised in the royal court.
