This painting features twenty-nine deer and is believed to be a fragment of a larger work depicting one hundred deer—a traditional symbol of longevity. Red plum blossoms bloom throughout the composition, suggesting a springtime setting. The deer are portrayed in a range of lively poses: walking with their fawns, locking antlers in play or combat, and grazing on the ground. Soft washes of color define their bodies, while their fur is delicately rendered with sparse, individual ink brushstrokes.
